There will be a screening of Freakonomics The Movie (2010) in the Motley on Friday, March 30th, 2012. Freakonomics is collection of documentaries that explores the hidden side of human nature through the use of the science of economics. It examines how people react to opportunities to gain, wittingly or otherwise. The subjects include the possible role a person’s name has for their success in life, why there is so much cheating in an honor bound sport like sumo wrestling, what helped reduce crime in the USA in the 1990s onward and we follow an school experiment to see if cash prizes can encourage struggling students to improve academically.

Grassroots Campaigns is an independent organization that does strategic consulting, fundraising, and field organizing for good causes and candidates. They specialize in building and running face-to-face outreach operations in neighborhoods and in high-traffic public venues to build support for groups, issues, and campaigns.

On March 27 and 28, Grassroots Campaigns will be on campus tabling and interviewing for their summer campaign jobs. This summer, Grassroots Campaigns is teaming up with advocacy groups and progressive organizations to tackle the problems facing our nation. Grassroots Campaigns’ current and past clients include some of the most well established and groundbreaking organizations in our country like the ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, OXFAM, League of Conservation Voters, The Nature Conservancy and The Sierra Club.

We are starting to realize that the government is not going to provide for us during retirement.   All indicators point towards increased taxation and a decrease in the value of the dollar.  This means that the fully taxed IRA, 401(k)s and the 403(b)s may not get the job done.  With Social Security’s trust fund in the process of collapsing, we must be prepared to close the income gap that is ahead of us.  Even if Social Security trust funds were not in trouble, the program is only designed to replace about 40% of a person’s average lifetime income.

In this presentation Len Cooper will discuss the reasons you should prepare for Retirement and the options that

are available to you.

We would like to thank everybody who came to support us, and for your kind donations.

Scripps Tea was a big success, and we raised over $75 in donations. The money we raised will be donated to women around the world who seek loans  to help their business ventures and/or for personal pursuits.

Interested in Econ? Want to know more about the Scripps College Economics Society, our Kiva project, or just like tea? SCES is collaborating with the Scripps Tea on Wednesday, February 15th! Come with any questions you have, everybody is welcome!

Exciting update of our Kiva project; so far we have made 22 loans to support projects around the world. Our portfolio now stands at  $546.20 of loans and the Society has hopes to keep increasing this throughout the semester. The donations that have been made have gone to support various individuals around the world, including countries such as Tajikistan, Lebanon, Ecuador, and Togo.
