Housing Search, Final Semester Blog Post

I can’t believe that it has already reached the end of the semester!  As I finish up this wonderful semester abroad and complete my final essays, I’m looking forward to a wonderful summer working at both Activision/Blizzard Studios and Lionsgate Entertainment.  Moving on from the internship search process to the LA housing search presents its own challenges but they are welcome ones.

Search Engines:

Search sites like Easy Roommate, Craigslist, ext. can be really beneficial for finding people looking for renters in any given area.  I found my summer housing through one of these types of sites and it ended up working out very well.

Find a Roommate:

Its always a little less intimidating to try and find summer housing when looking with someone else.

Look near universities:

Colleges sometimes will rent out their dorm space over the summer to students doing internships.  If not, there are ususally apartment complexes around colleges that cater to students.  Many are often looking to find sub letters to take over their leases over the summer and these can be a great option.

Tell Everyone!

Tell people you know that you are looking for accommodation.  You never know what people have heard about and someone might know a relative that you could stay with in the area.

It has been an absolute pleasure to Blog for CP&R again over this past semester and I hope that you all have a wonderful summer!  Will certainly miss the Class of 2018 but we can’t wait to see what they do in the future!

Dear High School Self…

I distinctly remember pacing my dad’s home office one afternoon senior year of high school.  I was almost in tears, worried about the future.  At this point, I didn’t even know where I was going to college yet so in retrospect, it was way too early to be thinking about planning out a potential career.  It was probably the stress of applications and senior year talking but I was so potently distraught that it is almost hard to think of the memory now.

I wish I could go back to that panicking 17-year-old and tell her not to worry (not that she would have believed me).  I would tell her that things will work out how they’re supposed to.  The best piece of career advice I could give to myself then would be to take a deep breath because you can’t see what the future holds yet.

I hadn’t yet gotten to college where I would discover, through experiences and my majors, that I wanted to work in entertainment.  You can’t always plan and figure out the grand plan because you simply lack the experiences necessary to make the path clear.

It is so easy to get into a trap of worrying about what you’re going to do after graduation.  When were younger, the idea is impressed upon us that we need to “decide what we want to be when we grow up”.  After listening to many people’s stories, I have found that there really is no ultimate goal of something to be.  Your career path can be as fluid and as nuanced as you are.  People change over time, and their goals will change.  What sounds appealing now may not in a years’ time.  And that’s ok!  Work with the information you’ve got, give it your all, and things will come together like they’re supposed to.

Why I Blog

Hello Everyone! A side note, writing this blog post from the Venice airport right now, I just spent a wonderful three days in the water filled city.  Would highly recommend visiting if you have the chance.  Anyway, on to the blog post.

I first got involved with CP&R by going on a Networking Trek and by participating in the Emerging Professionals Program.  After that I wanted to continue to be involved in the CP&R family so I applied to be a blogger.

I decided to apply for the Beyond the Elms Blogger Position because It gives me the chance think about my own career journey.  I don’t believe that we personally reflect on our experiences enough.  There’s so much you can learn if only you take the time to think about where you have been as well as where you would like to go.  The blogger position has given me the chance to reflect on my personal career journey and goals.

I also love sharing and providing career advice to my peers.  Its honestly one of my favorite things to hear about others career paths.  Each one is a story, with twists and turns, and it is a story that is still unfolding.  Anything I can do to help people on their journey, whether it is talking one on one or giving advice on the blog, is exciting to me.

Blogging is also a great way to get involved with the CP&R family.  It is truly a family!  Everyone involved with the office is amazing and so supportive.  If you’re ever thinking about applying for a blogger position, DO IT.  It is a fantastic way to do something meaningful, develop your writing skills, and get involved with a wonderful group of people.

An Interview Nightmare

An update from the depths of the semester: While I am still deep in the summer internship search I am thrilled to announce that I will be interning part-time at Activision/Blizzard Studios! I am incredibly excited about this opportunity and cannot wait to get to work. Even though I have the position secured I am still searching for a second opportunity to fill the rest of the week.  That brings me to what my blog topic for today: Interviewing.

I just had one of the most nerve wracking interviews of my life.  I got an email from a major studio recently requesting an interview and I couldn’t have been more excited!  It sounded like my perfect internship. I did everything you’re supposed to: I researched the company, I prepared points about my past positions, and I viewed my interviewer’s LinkedIn profile.

I thought I was completely prepared when I sat down for the interview.  I found out a few minutes into the call something that pulled the rug out from under me.  Due to a communication issue, I believed that the position was for scripted TV Development (shows with pre-written scripts).  But the position was actually for an internship in unscripted TV (reality TV and game shows)!  I felt the blood drain from my face I was so shocked.  Everything I had prepared for the interview was useless.

I thought on my feet as best as I could and still had a pleasant conversation but, needless to say, I didn’t get the position.  While disappointing, I’m trying not to be too hard on myself because I’m not sure the error could have been prevented.  I’m still searching for a second opportunity to fill out my week, but at least now though I have survived the worst and I know things will work out alright in the end.

Your mid-semester woes as told by Leslie Knope

When You’re Really Missing Winter Break

A month off of school sounds really good right about now.  Although it seems like a distant memory, the days of carefree relaxation call from the past.  One can try to reclaim those peaceful moments for a brief respite and to interject some cheer into spring.

Trying to choke down on another Malott Salad

I know, I know were gifted to have such wonderful dining halls with great healthy food options but sometimes you need a break from the same meal rotation.  9/10 times walking into Malott for lunch = the same darn salad.

When you forgot to do the reading and try to participate in class

We’ve all been there.  Got a little too carried away the night before on a Netflix binge and then that 50 page reading just never got done? Happens to the best of us! Not to worry because there’s always the failproof “piggy back off of someone else’s answer” tactic.
