CP&R is pleased to announce the return of the Emerging Professionals Program Winter Intensive, a 1 week program which allows students to explore their strengths, clarify their professional goals and discern next steps.
In an effort to demonstrate the power of networking and give them an opportunity to learn from those ahead of them on their career journeys, each student was paired with a mentor to support them throughout the program. Every effort was made to match students with mentors in their field of interest.
This year we’re trying something a little bit different. Instead of incorporating the mentoring piece into the 1 week intensive schedule we plan to introduce mentors at the conclusion of EPP week so students can continue the conversation. Equipped with new learning (and many more questions) students will be able to engage in a thoughtful way, and mentors and students can find days and time that work best for them.
If you are interested in serving as an EPP mentor in the future apply now and we will follow up with details for future events.
We are also looking for workshop facilitators, panelists, and speakers. Learn more.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is required of mentors?
The ultimate goal is for EPP mentors to act as positive career role models for students. EPP Mentors can choose a communication method that works best for them. Students will be taking in a lot of information through the one-week intensive and will be encouraged to apply what they learn through discussion with their mentors post EPP week. Each student will be responsible for preparing questions for each meeting, so you need only to be available and willing to share your story and perspective. Students may ask you to review professional materials (resume, cover letter, applications, LinkedIn), and you are expected to share your experience and expertise as it pertains to your field. The goal is for students to get a real-life snapshot of life in your job/industry, so candid sharing is encouraged.
What is the time commitment?
The Mentor component is meant to extend EPP beyond the confines of a one week intensive. A good goal would be to connect with your student once a month January-April for 30-60 minutes per meeting. During those 4 sessions you might consider: Sharing your professional journey, offering to review their resume, discussing your experience with networking, sharing challenges you’ve encountered in the workplace, reading an article together and discussing. Really, sky’s the limit. We know we can’t force a relationship but hope it can be an organic connection that is positive for both of you.
How are students prepared for this mentoring relationship?
Students will learn about how to make the most of mentor/mentee relationship during EPP week and will be expected to guide the process of connecting with you. We’ll go over expectations so they understand you’re not there to get them an internship or job but simply to share your career expertise and experience post Scripps.
Do I need to be based in Los Angeles to participate?
Mentors can connect with students via telephone or Skype. It is not necessary for you to meet with your student in-person. (Though you’re welcome to do so if you are local!)
Can I mentor more than one student at a time?
Absolutely! If you are open to taking on multiple students, please let us know.
Am I guaranteed a student match?
While we do our best to match students and mentors based on interest areas it is possible (though unlikely) that you will not receive a student match for this year’s intensive depending on how many applicants we receive.
When is the deadline to apply as a mentor?
Why wait? Apply today.
Are there any in-person meetings?
There will be a final banquet for program participants tentatively scheduled for Saturday January 14, 2017 11:00-1:00pm. We would love it if mentors could join us for that event but understand this may be difficult for those who live out of state.
