{"id":798,"date":"2013-04-24T20:14:06","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T20:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/community.scrippscollege.edu\/itfits\/?p=798"},"modified":"2013-04-24T20:14:06","modified_gmt":"2013-04-24T20:14:06","slug":"google-tools-the-google-cultural-institute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/community.scrippscollege.edu\/itfits\/google-tools-the-google-cultural-institute\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Tools: The Google Cultural Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google is a very versatile company with one of the best search engines in the world \u2013 so much so that you don\u2019t search something, you Google it.\u00a0 Google also has a number of tools that most people are familiar with: Google Drive (formerly GoogleDocs), Gmail, Google+, Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Translate, and Google Books are some of the most commonly used ones.\u00a0 If you go to Google.com, you\u2019ll find a list of services across the top of the window.\u00a0 At the far right of that list, there\u2019s a link to More, and from there a link to Even More.\u00a0 And yet there are some tools that aren\u2019t even on the Even More list.<\/p>\n<p>A history professor introduced me to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/home\"><strong>Google Cultural Institute<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 You can see what the site has to offer with the Explore tab.\u00a0 There are currently three channels on the site itself: Fall of the Iron Curtain, Stories of the Holocaust, and the French-German Treaty of Friendship.\u00a0 Each channel sends you to a series of exhibits you can examine in more detail.\u00a0 You can also search the Institute by decade, partner (this gives you a search result of what that partner has posted to the Institute), and projects sponsored by Google but not overtly part of the Google Cultural Institute.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Interested in why Google is sponsoring museums? A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/11\/21\/technology\/quietly-google-puts-history-online.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=1&amp;\"><strong>New York Times article<\/strong><\/a> has some insight into Google&#8217;s motives for creating the Google Cultural Institute. Museums and cultural institutes are pairing with Google to digitize their work and get it to a wider audience.
