A Candid Conversation with President Tiedens

As an extrovert, I’ve always been fascinated by the ways that humans interact with each other. My decision to major in Cognitive Science was a natural extension of that, and through these studies, I’ve gravitated towards exploring the ways that humans lead and influence groups and multitudes of people. Having Read more…

The next day I got up and started where I left off. And I walked. I really had planned to do 1,400 miles. I walked from Fort Worth to Arlington and Grand Prairie and Dallas. Two and a half miles until my team said, ‘You won’t be doing it like that.’ The reason was that somebody had offered us an RV so I wouldn’t have to go to hotels and stuff. But they decided what I was doing was too political, and they reneged. So my team said, ‘You only go where there are Juneteenth observations and festivals, and you will only go if you are invited.’ Well, I was invited all over the United States.”

Blake says it best in her reflections on the Forté Foundation's Certificate Program:

"The Laspa Center for Leadership partners with the Forté Foundation to provide complimentary access for Scripps students to the Career Ready Certificate Program. This program is an online course designed to encourage students to capitalize on their leadership skills, enhance hireability, and increase knowledge about the corporate world in a non-intimidating format...

The Career-Ready Certificate was an excellent (free!) opportunity to boost my resume, networks, and understanding about who I am and what is important to me in life. I feel that this program is already advantageous to my future as it encourages me to be intentional with my thoughts, feelings, and fears about entering the corporate world after college."
In honor of Mental Health Awareness month, we are In honor of Mental Health Awareness month, we are celebrating a leader we love and a true mental health pioneer, Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark!

The Legal Defense Fund writes: "In the 1940s, psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark designed and conducted a series of experiments known colloquially as “the doll tests” to study the psychological effects of segregation on African-American children.

Drs. Clark used four dolls, identical except for color, to test children’s racial perceptions. Their subjects, children between the ages of three to seven, were asked to identify both the race of the dolls and which color doll they prefer. A majority of the children preferred the white doll and assigned positive characteristics to it. The Clarks concluded that “prejudice, discrimination, and segregation” created a feeling of inferiority among African-American children and damaged their self-esteem.

The doll test was only one part of Dr. Clark’s testimony in Brown vs. Board – it did not constitute the largest portion of his analysis and expert report. His conclusions during his testimony were based on a comprehensive analysis of the most cutting-edge psychology scholarship of the period."

Known by many as “Battling Bella”, Bella Abzug Known by many as “Battling Bella”, Bella Abzug is a leader we love, and we are celebrating her trailblazing legacy in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month!

The Bella Abzug Leadership Institute writes: "Bella S. Abzug was one of the most influential and recognizable female politicians and leaders of the late 20th century. After an acclaimed career as a civil rights lawyer, peace activist and political organizer, she sought public office for the first time at age 50 under her famous slogan: 'This woman’s place is in the House – the House of Representatives.'

As a result of her groundbreaking campaigns for higher office, Bella is often credited with paving the way for women aspiring to even higher levels of office, and opening doors to power for all women and especially to generations of women leaders in politics and government.

Bella continually devised innovative strategies to further her vision of equality and power for women in the United States and abroad. In the last decade of her life, in the early 1990’s, she co-founded the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), one of the largest non-governmental organizations working in the United Nations and internationally to achieve full economic rights and equal representation for women.
