{"id":36,"date":"2017-04-06T23:12:08","date_gmt":"2017-04-06T23:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/community.scrippscollege.edu\/scrippsjournal\/?p=36"},"modified":"2019-03-11T23:20:10","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T23:20:10","slug":"2017-art-and-writing-contest-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/community.scrippscollege.edu\/scrippsjournal\/2017-art-and-writing-contest-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"2017 Art and Writing Contest Winners!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After receiving many wonderful submissions for the Scripps College Journal\u2019s 2017 Art\u00a0and Writing Contests, we are pleased to announce this year\u2019s winners:<br \/>\n~<br \/>\n<strong>Writing Contest<\/strong><span><br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>First Place: Lulu Priddy \u2013 \u201c[the gulls, in frenzy]\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><em>Lulu Priddy is a first year at Scripps College and is from New York City. She loves to write, specifically poetry, as well as work in visual art. She often crosses over the two mediums to create work that includes language and drawing or painting. Most of her work explores sound, color, and other abstract themes that involve the senses. In June of 2016 she published a chapbook of poetry entitled \u201cSwallow, Low\u201d with a press in Brooklyn, NY and plans to continue writing throughout her time in Claremont and onwards.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>See Lulu&#8217;s writing piece <a href=\"https:\/\/community.scrippscollege.edu\/scrippsjournal\/2017\/04\/06\/the-gulls-in-frenzy-by-lulu-priddy\/\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Second Place: Ittai Sopher \u2013 \u201cWhat I Do Not Tell My Mommy\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Ittai Sopher is a Sophomore at Pitzer College and is currently studying Political Studies. He has\u00a0always enjoyed storytelling and writing. His\u00a0favorite writers are Virginia Woolf and Raymond Carver. He is\u00a0originally from Englewood, New Jersey where he enjoys going on long walks through the woods and looking at dialect maps.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>See Ittai\u2019s writing piece\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/community.scrippscollege.edu\/scrippsjournal\/2017\/04\/06\/what-i-do-not-tell-my-mommy-by-ittai-sopher\/\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><span>Third Place: Matthew Lee \u2013 \u201cA River Like a Knife\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>See Matthew\u2019s writing piece\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/community.scrippscollege.edu\/scrippsjournal\/2017\/04\/06\/a-river-like-a-knife-by-matthew-lee\/\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n~<br \/>\n<strong>Art Contest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>First Place:\u00a0<\/span><span>Mirenna Scott \u2013 \u201cPouched\u201d<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Mirenna is a\u00a0first year at Pomona College and has been a ceramics enthusiast for a few years now. She is\u00a0from Portland Oregon, where she went to Grant High School and got involved with the ceramics department there. For her final project as a senior, she created a series of ten pieces in a concentration\u00a0themed life cycles and transformation.
