For two decades, it has annually selected academic and creative student work, published the winning essays of the prestigious Marie McSpadden Sands Writing Awards, and, beginning Spring 2020, will interview with Scripps-related luminaries in the arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SCJ believes in work that engages meaningfully in the histories of ourselves and of our relationships to each other. The editorial staff at SCJ looks forward to viewing your submissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SUBMIT NOW<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SCJ is seeking creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, visual art\/photography, and multimedia work!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Submissions are automatically considered for the <b>SCJ 2020 Writing and Art Contest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. First place winners of each journal category will receive a $50 Amazon gift card and a signed book. Submissions may be selected for publication online or in print, or both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>All 7C students are welcome to submit.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Simultaneous submissions will not be accepted.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Submissions should be of original work and not have been published elsewhere before. Please notify us if you find out your piece is published elsewhere after submitting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Please remember to keep your submission anonymous.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Do not include your name anywhere on the file, whether in the title or before the actual piece. We have since expanded this category to include argumentative essays, personal narrative writing, interviews, reviews, opinion pieces, and other original nonfiction work.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fiction: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This category calls for fiction in all its diverse forms, including screenplays, short stories, flash fiction, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poetry: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poetry can wear different faces (hence, prose poetry). We would love to see different forms and styles, traditional or contemporary, narrative or dramatic, lyric or epic, experimental or free verse.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visual Art: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SCJ greatly values visual artwork on the Claremont campuses. This category is for graphics, illustrations, digital art, cartoons, photographs, and photographs of other media (e.g. paintings).\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multimedia: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The category \u201cmultimedia work\u201d includes but is not limited to videos, animation, short films, music, audio files, and other files that can be posted and experienced online.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Send your submissions through the online form<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/83f6vT9M46Wu5rqw5\"><b> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">here<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please make sure to review our submission guidelines below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Again, please keep your submissions anonymous. Do not include your name anywhere on the file, whether in the title or before the actual piece.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Submit respectful, informed, and original work that has not been published elsewhere before. Selected work should be polished and considerate of its audience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You must currently attend one of the Claremont Colleges. Use your school email to authenticate your student status.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep written work under 5,000 words. Proofread, proofread, proofread!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SCJ reserves the right to request that any accepted pieces be edited before publication to adhere to staff suggestions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Uploading formats<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Writing pieces must be submitted in Word Document files.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visual art pieces must be submitted in JPEG file.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multimedia pieces must be submitted in an uploadable format (MP4, MP3, link to third party platform like Youtube).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Label each file as follows: &#8220;Title of Work_Category of Submission.doc&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each person may only submit up to 5 entries (and only once through the online form), so please keep in mind to review all final entries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; After Submission &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By accepting the offer to publish, you are agreeing to the following terms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SCJ retains the rights to publish your work in print\/online and be featured via our social media pages.
