What is it?<\/strong>
\nMany college students are unnecessarily afraid of the word “networking”; it conjures up thoughts of brazen backslapping, sweaty hands, and stilted conversations. But at its core, networking is simply the act of building relationships through intentional conversations that help people meet their goals. It involves communicating with someone in the same industry outside the normal working environment, and it is usually done in job fairs, trade events, conferences, and luncheons. Networking will not satisfy those merely seeking instant gratification; and networking is not about the number of Friends, Followers, or Connections you have. As Career Planning & Resources’ Services Guide<\/a> explains, an effective network is built upon a solid foundation of relationships that are created and maintained over time.<\/p>\n

Networking in the US still carries connotations of schmoozing with executives, the “old boys’ club”, and quid pro quo. But the Internet has led to an understanding of a network as a more inclusive, dynamic, and permeable entity. Most recently, professional networks have been established on Internet websites–the most famous one being LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Why is it important?<\/strong>
\nNetworking allows emerging professionals to establish contacts, share opportunities, explore careers, gain insight into specific industries, and take the next step when it comes to our careers. This valuable skill is essential to students our age, because it gives us the chance to meet with and impress industry professionals who may be able to help us advance our careers. Networking skills are essential to all career-seeking college students.<\/p>\n

Most emerging business professionals and college graduates already use the Internet frequently; it is more recently that they are starting to take advantage of the Internet’s possibilities for the benefit of their professional development.<\/p>\n

When should I start?<\/strong>
\nYou probably already have! Your friends, family, previous supervisors, and co-workers are all part of\u00a0 your professional network. An important thing to do now is to be more intentional about creating and maintaining your online image<\/a> through social networks and other online sites.<\/p>\n
