{"id":315,"date":"2013-11-04T05:19:24","date_gmt":"2013-11-04T05:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/community.scrippscollege.edu\/spn\/?p=315"},"modified":"2015-03-30T02:23:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-30T02:23:41","slug":"315","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/community.scrippscollege.edu\/spn\/2013\/11\/04\/315\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Gross: Entrepreneur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1694\" src=\"http:\/\/geekitout.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/11\/idealab_bldg.jpg\" alt=\"idealab_bldg\" width=\"239\" height=\"215\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bill Gross, creator of Idealab, an incubator in Pasadena, spoke at CMC on Friday. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a short summary:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Pursue your passion<\/li>\n<li>The more disruptive the better<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t spend ahead of success\/traction<\/li>\n<li>Timing matters<\/li>\n<li>Execution really matters<\/li>\n<li>Survive until the market\u2019s ready<\/li>\n<li>Recognize your strengths<\/li>\n<li>Teamwork Matters<\/li>\n<li>Listen and Iterate \u2013 Turn on ideas<\/li>\n<li>Harness your user\u2019s passion<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Other important points he made:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Give out lots of equity to encourage people to join the start-up team.<\/li>\n<li>The only way you can win against big companies is by outmaneuvering them with your small size.\u00a0 Keep your ear to the ground, listen to your customers, and adapt quickly.<\/li>\n<li>Find the things that don\u2019t work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And finally, all truths pass through three phases, so sometimes you just need to push through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ridicule<\/li>\n<li>Violently opposed<\/li>\n<li>Self evident<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After his presentation, we were allowed to ask questions. \u00a0Some of the most interesting were:<\/p>\n<p>Q: What are the positions necessary in a start-up?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Entrepreneurial &#8211;
