About

[in]Visible Magazine is a student-run, biannual Scripps College magazine. Founded in 2008 by Becca Marion and Laura Passarelli, [in]Visible derives its name from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry: L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux” (“The essential is invisible to the eyes.”) Together, they were struck by the presence of negative stereotypes and body image issues prevalent in the community, especially at an all-women college. They picked a magazine as the best format to tackle this issue, since print is often the most common form in which negative issues are spread–skinny models, fashion articles, celebrity gossip magazines. Recruiting their friends, the first issue of [in]Visible was born that spring. From the beginning, the magazine found a following among the Scripps students, staff, and faculty, some students even describing it as “the only publication they liked on campus.”

In 2009, the founders had plans to go abroad for their junior year and leadership passed on for the first time to Ann Mayhew and Catherine Wang. Together, the new team of editors worked on creating consistency throughout the magazine, creating this website, hosting community outreach events, and increasing their presence at Scripps College. Again, a variety of issues were addressed: different perspectives on eating disorders, national and international current events, healthy eating, interviews with students on their experiences ranging from Christian to staff to transgender, and objective looks at the media and body image/women in the media.

We print once a semester through Claremont Connections, in the Honnold/Mudd Library. The staff is made up entirely of students, and is very team-based. Every semester, we advertise and recruit new students to create a new staff of artists, writers, designers, and copy editors. Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of experience, and we keep the writers, artists, and designers who contribute work as connected to the editing process as possible.

Besides producing the publication, the [in]Visible seeks to spread its mission through hosting fun, interactive community events. We have hosted events from free tie-dying to face-painting to a “Karaoke with the Stars” night. We also love collaborating with other organizations on campus, such as the 5C Feminist Remix and A-Team. To learn more about outreach events, please visit this page.

The magazine is sponsored by Health Education Outreach (HEO) and Scripps Associated Students (SAS), and has received additionally assistance from the Scripps Office of Public Relations, the Scripps Student Investment Fund, and the Tiernan Field House.
