Submissions are open for our Spring 2021 issue!

For two decades, Scripps College Journal has annually selected creative and academic student work, published the winning essays of the prestigious Marie McSpadden Sands Writing Awards, and, beginning Spring 2020, will interview Scripps-related luminaries in the arts.

SCJ believes in work that engages meaningfully in the histories of ourselves and of our relationships to each other. The editorial staff at SCJ looks forward to viewing your submissions.

Submit Now

Send your submissions through the online form here.

SCJ is seeking creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, visual art (including photography), and multimedia work!

Submissions are automatically considered for the SCJ 2021 Writing and Art Contest. First place winners will receive a $15 VISA gift card. Submissions may be selected for publication online or in print, or both.

All 7C students are welcome to submit.

Simultaneous submissions will not be accepted. Submissions should be of original work and not have been published elsewhere before. Please notify us if you find out your piece is published elsewhere after submitting.

Please remember to keep your submission anonymous. Do not include your name anywhere on the file, whether in the title or before the actual piece. (You will indicate your name and other information within the online form.)

Deadline: Wednesday, March 25, 2021 at 11:59pm.
(Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this deadline is more flexible than in previous years.)

Due to the high volume of submissions, we will only be able to contact those whose pieces are shortlisted.

Categories

Nonfiction: SCJ began as a journal for academic prose. We have since expanded this category to include argumentative essays, personal narrative writing, interviews, reviews, opinion pieces, and other original nonfiction work.

Fiction: This category calls for fiction in all its diverse forms, including screenplays, short stories, flash fiction, etc.

Poetry: Poetry can wear different faces (hence, prose poetry). We would love to see different forms and styles, traditional or contemporary, narrative or dramatic, lyric or epic, experimental or free verse.

Visual Art: SCJ greatly values visual artwork on the Claremont campuses. This category is for graphics, illustrations, digital art, cartoons, photographs, and photographs of other media (e.g. paintings).

Multimedia: The category “multimedia work” includes but is not limited to videos, animation, short films, music, audio files, and other files that can be posted and experienced online.
