Submissions Open for 2023 Spring Issue!

Submissions are open for the Scripps College Journal!

Send in your work through this Google form to have your work featured in our 2023 issue!

Thank you for your interest in submitting to the Scripps College Journal. The SCJ is a student-run literary magazine founded in 1999.

For two decades, it has annually selected academic and creative student work and published the winning essays of the prestigious Marie McSpadden Sands Writing Awards.

All submissions through this form will be considered for publication in the Spring 2023 print issue of the SCJ. Selected submissions will receive publication in our print issue (available in May) as well as on our website. Winners of each journal category (nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and art) will receive a $50 Amazon gift card. Any current student from the Claremont Colleges may submit. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 11:59pm. We look forward to viewing your submissions!

SUBMISSION CATEGORY DETAILS:

  • Nonfiction: SCJ began as a journal for academic prose. We have since expanded this category to include argumentative essays, personal narrative writing, creative nonfiction, interviews, reviews, opinion pieces, and other original nonfiction work.
  • Fiction: This category calls for fiction in all its diverse forms, including screenplays, short stories, flash fiction, etc.
  • Poetry: Poetry can wear different faces (hence, prose poetry). We would love to see different forms and styles, traditional or contemporary, narrative or dramatic, lyric or epic, experimental or free verse.
  • Art: This category is for graphics, illustrations, digital art, cartoons, photographs, and photographs of other media (e.g. paintings).

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • Anonymity is important to our decision process. Please do not include your name anywhere on the file, whether in the title or before the actual piece.
  • Submissions should be of original work and not have been published elsewhere before. Please notify us if you find out your piece is published elsewhere after submitting.
  • Keep written work under 5,000 words.
  • SCJ reserves the right to request that any accepted pieces be edited before publication to adhere to staff suggestions.
  • Please submit all writing pieces as Word Document files
  • Please submit all art pieces in a JPEG file
  • Label each file as follows: “Title of Work_Category of Submission.doc”
  • Each person may only submit up to 5 entries in one form response, but may only fill out the Google form once.
