Congratulations to Lulu Priddy for winning first place in The Scripps College Journal Writing Contest with this poem!
~
The gulls, in frenzy,
struck kaleidoscope patterns
above the sunken nulls.
The grass was swollen,
near roll and reigning.
None ever round,
yet so stole and drunk and ballooning
that green became king,
recasting galaxies to colder places.
Noon snickered at the oval dew drops
and the evenings were sipped on
as if the elixir
of low sun and dragonflies were eternal.
Time was so foolish
almost as foolish as the temperature
and those moons.
The big moon showing off its hills.
There are hills here too:
of strawberries and edelweiss
of sage and an eerie wind.
