New in Windows 8: Part 1

If you are a PC user, you are probably quite aware that PC laptops (and some desktops) have a new operating system called Windows 8. Visually, it’s quite different from the preceeding systems: Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Windows 8 has a Start Screen rather than a Start Button, which is arranged similar to apps on a smartphone or tablet. If you have Windows 8, but prefer to work on the traditional desktop format, one of the preset ‘apps’ is a link to an actual desktop interface. To paraphrase the Dummies’ Guide to Windows 8, it has a split personality between the social/play (the Start Screen), and work (the desktop).

Windows 8 was designed for touchscreens, so if you have a regular laptop, it can become confusing or difficult at times. To quit a window, you can either:

  1. Move into a different window, hover over the Start region in the lower left, skim the mouse up to find open tabs, and right-click on the tab to close it, or
  2. Move to the top center of the open window until your cursor turns into a hand, grab the window, and drag it down to the bottom of the screen, where it will automatically quit

Depending on the size of your screen, you can also keep two apps (i.e. programs) open in the same window by grabbing one (as in number 2 above) and dragging it to one side of the screen.

More information regarding Windows 8 will be coming soon! Note: There is currently no support for Windows 8 computers to connect to the Scripps network share or for printing.
