You are probably familiar with Dropbox on Sakai, but there is another Dropbox you may not be so familiar with – dropbox.com. Dropbox is an online file storage and file sharing service, and it’s free for up to 2 GB of space (you can get more free space for doing small things like getting a friend to join, for example). It works like a flashdrive, so that if you delete older files you can continue storing more files on it.
Download Dropbox to your home computer, follow the program’s instructions, and it will act like a regular folder on your own computer, but better – anything you save to the Dropbox will be available online through dropbox.com. (You will need your internet on so it can sync.) You can also upload documents to dropbox.com anywhere and they will be available in your Dropbox folder when you get home. Additionally, you can download Dropbox on your smartphone.
You can use Dropbox to back up important files so that if your computer crashes, you won’t have to worry about those files. You can also share folders within your Dropbox with others. This is great for vacation photos – instead of having to email them two to five at a time, you can save them in your Dropbox, share them via dropbox.com, and your friends can view them online.
