Scripps College Economic Society Book Club – “Lean In”

The Scripps College Economics Society hosted a discussion about Lean In, written by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. Her book gives practical suggestions for increasing women’s representation in leadership positions in all industries. This followed a telecast with Sandberg in which she discusses her ongoing efforts to elevate the status of women worldwide by promoting women’s leadership.

The meeting was well attended, and participants engaged in a lively discussion about Sandberg’s book as well as the more general issues that professional and working women (especially in the finance and tech industries) face.

Pumpkin cinnamon rolls, apple cider, and pumpkin spice bread accompanied the meeting as well.

Scripps Economics Society Dinner

Scripps economics majors joined faculty members and guest speaker, Dr. Bevin Ashenmiller at the Scripps Economics Society semi-annual dinner. Dr. Bevin Ashenmiller is currently an economics professor at Occidental College, and served as a Senior Economist for the Energy and the Environment at the White House Council of Economic Advisers last year. She spoke about her experience adjusting to the Washington D.C. environment and the reality of her ability to make impact on policy. Dr. Ashenmiller shared that she initially did not believe she would be accepted to the program, and emphasized the importance of students taking risks and seeking opportunities.

Her report analyzing the economics of recycling has been featured on the Wall Street Journal; read it here.

Learn to Use LinkedIn

Yesterday, Career Planning & Resources and the Scripps Professional Network co-hosted an informational workshop on LinkedIn. The room was packed with students of all class years. Attendees learned how to use LinkedIn to further their professional goals. Whether students were beginners or already had accounts, Valinda of CP&R showed them how to create (or improve) a LinkedIn account.

LinkedIn is a social networking site designed specifically for the business community. The goal of the site is to allow registered members to establish and document networks of people they know and trust professionally. The Network is excited to host this event, and others like it, in the future.
